Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that rear-projection televisions ? RPTVs ? posted a 3% revenue gain in October in spite of a 2.7% drop in unit sales over the previous month.
?The average street price jumped 5.5% for the month, ?according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President. ?The key reason for this large increase ? a rarity in the world of consumer electronics ? was the dramatic growth in the fraction of sales of 1080p resolution microdisplay-technology models, from 13% in August to 24% in September and a whopping 32% in October.
?Another factor for the price increase was the continued shift toward larger models," she continued. ?The 50-to-55-inch segment went from 32% to 36% unit share, accounting for 40% of the total revenues, up from 34%. The growing popularity of liquid-crystal on silicon ? LCoS ? models, including D-ILA from JVC and the premium-priced SXRD from Sony, also helped boost street prices.?
DLP continues to be the dominant technology with nearly two-thirds of the total revenues, but two of Sony?s LCD displays ? the 42-inch KDF-E42A10 and the 50-inch KDF-E50A10, ? placed number one and two on Pacific Media?s top ten best-selling list of RPTVs for October. And on a revenue basis, Mitsubishi regained the top position, with the top-grossing 62-inch DLP WD-62628, after Samsung held the position for one month.
